OnePlus 5T(OP5T) has launched on November end as a succeeder of OnePlus 5(OP5). The OnePlus company has announced that their latest phone will be a new flagship device. The new flagship consists of some newer features and improvements that OnePlus 5. The company also states that OnePlus 5 will be discontinued soon.
In the new era of smartphones and moreover smart users, rooting a device has become a common thing. With the help of root phones hidden potential can be used, flashing custom ROM’s, upgrading to newer version ahead of the official launch can be done.

How to Root OnePlus 5T
Rooting OnePlus 5T consists of three major steps.
- Unlock Bootloader
- Install custom Recovery ( TWRP)
- flash root.zip
We will see each step in detail
1. Unlock Bootloader of OnePlus 5T
By default boot sector of the device is locked/un-writable. By unlocking the bootloader you can able to flash a custom boot image on the device. Hence we can flash any custom recovery to flash custom ROM, custom scripts.
To unlock bootloader of OnePlus 5T, you need first need to have adb drivers installed on your device. download them from above section.
Turn off your device and boot it into fastboot mode by holding volume up + power.
Now, connect your device to computer using the USB cable. On, computer open command by going start – run- type “cmd” and hit enter.
in cmd window type below code and hit enter –
cmd will show all connected device. if your device is not listed that means adb drivers are not properly installed. Install adb drivers properly and follow next steps.
fastboot oem unlock
You would be greeted with an Unlock Bootloader Warning page, Hit the Vol button to select Yes and turn it Blue and Hit the Power Button to Execute the selection
Your device will reboot, show you a Secure boot warning, reboot into stock recovery and wipe all data. Once done, your phone will reboot into the OS.
2. Flash TWRP recovery on OnePlus 5T
Default stock recovery is not configured to flash any custom script, so we need to replace it with custom recovery. Once bootloader gets unlocked you can now able to flash the custom recovery.
currently, an unofficial version of TWRP by XDA member @ibe is available. Download it from above download section.
Enable USB debugging – On your phone go to Settings > About phone > Tap on Build number 7 times. This will enable Developer options. Now go back to Settings > Developer options > Enable USB debugging.
Enable OEM Unlocking – On your phone go to Settings > Developer options. Then enable the ‘OEM Unlocking’ option and make sure that from now on, OEM unlocking option is enabled before you reboot. Sometimes, it might get disabled itself.
Turn off your device and boot it into fastboot mode by holding volume up + power. Connect it to computer using USM cable and in cmd type
fastboot flash recovery (file name).img
Once flashing completed, don’t reboot your phone. Instead, reboot it in recovery mode by pressing power + volume down key simultaneously. Continue to follow below steps from here to root your device.
3. Root OnePlus 5T using SuperSU or Magisk
Once the device has entered in custom recovery (in above step), swipe right to enable system modifications.
Now, select install and choose downloaded SuperSU/ Magisk zip file. Swipe right to start the process.
Reboot your device now. Done, you have successfully rooted OnePlus 5T
